Twelve assessments, rebuilt without breaking fourteen years of scores.

A legacy assessment product that could not run on a phone — rebuilt without invalidating a single historical score.

The situation

An online cognitive-skills assessment for children and adolescents: twelve timed, game-based tests producing an age-normalised profile, so a parent or school can see which specific skills are strong and which are weak rather than receiving a single number.

What we found

A legacy PHP application with jQuery and fixed-width desktop layouts, unusable on a phone or tablet — a serious problem for a product whose users are children. Every assessment had to be rebuilt with exact behavioural fidelity, because scoring depends on a hand-built age-normalisation table calibrated against the original tests: change an assessment's difficulty and every historical score becomes meaningless.

What we built

  • All twelve assessments rebuilt as responsive components — no plugins, no iframes, no legacy scripting
  • A per-assessment interactive tutorial so a child practises the mechanic before the scored run begins
  • An age-normalisation scoring service converting raw answers to a normalised score against a 3,908-row reference table
  • A guest-first entry flow: an assessment starts from year of birth alone, with no account and no payment required
  • Payment integration with a server-side confirmation path
  • A results report with per-skill scoring and report generation
  • An admin panel with a statistics dashboard, per-user results, editable report narrative text and content management
  • Answer gating shared across every assessment, so a question cannot be answered before the prompt has finished

Where it stands now

Live, running split between a hosted front end and the client's own server, against the original database that still carries results going back over a decade.
